Holy Sepulchre Northampton Round Church
Holy Sepulchre Northampton Round Church

Step inside over 900 years of history at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Northampton, the oldest and largest surviving medieval round church in the United Kingdom. Originally built around 1100 AD by Simon de Senlis, 1st Earl of Northampton, this remarkable church invites you to discover centuries of history, architecture and fascinating stories hidden within its ancient walls.

During our regular Church Open Days, visitors are welcome to explore the building, admire the original Norman architecture and discover features that have survived for more than nine centuries. Marvel at the magnificent stained-glass east window depicting King Richard the Lionheart at the Battle of Jaffa, and look closely at the extraordinary medieval wooden corbels depicting musicians playing their instruments. Discover the fascinating carved stone corbel runs, originally decorating the outside of the Norman church but now preserved inside following centuries of rebuilding and expansion. From intricate Romanesque carvings to the eight great Norman columns supporting the circular nave, there is something remarkable to discover around every corner.

Our friendly volunteers are on hand to welcome you, answer questions and share the stories behind this extraordinary building. Whether you’re passionate about medieval history, interested in architecture, visiting Northampton or simply looking for somewhere different to explore, everyone is welcome. Come and experience the history for yourself, discover the people who built and worshipped here, and see why the Holy Sepulchre remains one of Northampton’s most remarkable historic treasures.

We look forward to welcoming you!
