About Round Churches of Britain

Round Churches of Britain is an independent project exploring the history, architecture and stories of Britain’s medieval round churches — both those we can still visit and those that have disappeared.

These unusual buildings offer a connection to Jerusalem, medieval pilgrimage and the age of the Crusades. Some belonged to the Knights Templar or Knights Hospitaller; others were founded by patrons and religious communities drawn to the significance of the Holy Sepulchre. Each has its own story to tell.

Through historical research, photographs, visits and an interactive map, we aim to bring those stories together. We explore who founded the churches, how their buildings changed, what happened to the lost examples and what visitors can discover today. Where evidence is uncertain, we distinguish documented history from tradition and interpretation.

The project grows from a personal interest in medieval churches and time spent volunteering at the Holy Sepulchre in Northampton. We hope to encourage more people to explore these remarkable places, appreciate their architecture and support the communities and volunteers who care for them.

Whether you are a researcher, a church enthusiast or simply curious, you are welcome here. If you have photographs, memories or historical information to contribute, we would love to hear from you.

Explore the churches, discover their stories and help us preserve their history.
