Everyone is warmly welcomed to worship at the Church of St John the Baptist in Little Maplestead, Essex, one of only four surviving medieval round churches in England. Dating from the 14th century and originally associated with the Knights Hospitaller of St John of Jerusalem, this remarkable church continues to serve its local community as an active Church of England parish church. Services are held within the beautiful circular nave, offering visitors the opportunity to experience Christian worship in a building with centuries of religious history. Led by members of the local clergy and lay ministry team, services include Holy Communion, Morning Prayer, Bible readings, hymns and opportunities for quiet reflection. The church also hosts special celebrations throughout the Christian year, maintaining its historic connection with the Order of St John.
Whether you regularly attend church or have never been to a service before, you will find a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. There is no special dress code, and visitors are welcome to come as they feel comfortable. Services generally take place on the first Sunday of the month at 11.00am for Holy Communion and the fourth Sunday at 9.30am for Morning Prayer. On the third Sunday, a shared service is normally held at 10.00am, rotating between Little Maplestead, Great Maplestead, Pebmarsh and Gestingthorpe. There is usually no service on the second Sunday. If you are unfamiliar with church services, there is no pressure to participate; you are welcome simply to sit, listen and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. The church is also normally open daily for visitors wishing to explore its historic architecture, spend time in prayer or enjoy a moment of quiet reflection
